The Ovation MM68 is a truly modern mandolin. The first designed from scratch as an acoustic electric. Plugged in, the special design pickup and OP-24+ electronics truly make this mandolin sing. Unplugged, the Ovation Mandolin is rich, throaty with plenty of punch.
The OP-24+ features three EQ bands with the ability to shift the mid band to either a 400Hz or 1KHz center frequency. It also features a Pre-Shape circuit that lifts the base and treble and reduces the "rumble" frequencies below 40Hz. The Pre-Shape and EQ have bypass switches and the volume slider features a custom-taper.
The MM68 sound is more open than Loar styled mandolins (the Loar sound is more compressed). It is closer to the sound of the old style bowl back mandolins (as you might expect from an Ovation instrument).
The low notes have a deeper resonance, and the highs are sweet. It seems to project well. The thing about Ovations is that what you hear as the player isn`t exactly the same as what the listener hears.
The sound projects out and away from you where as with wood box instruments the sound radiates more around you. This gives the impression that the wood box instruments are louder even if they are not.
The MM68 fits many different styles (Bluegrass, Celtic, Jazz, Country, Cajun, Folk, etc) plugged or unplugged. When plugged in it is very nice lead melody instrument. Acoustically it will hold it`s own with dreadnoughts, fiddles, and stand-up basses.
